ASVAB Scores Needed To Enlist

What Is The Minimum ASVAB Scores Needed To Enlist?

ASVAB ScoresThat question of what ASVAB scores are needed to gain entrance to the military comes up a lot. The answer relies upon which branch your trying to get into.

Here is the latest info I got, but remember, things change daily. If a certain branch is meeting its enlistment goals in the first few days each month, they are likely to increase the needed scores. If they are having a real hard time getting people to enlist they will then lower their scores (and up their enlistment bonuses) to get more people to join. It’s a numbers game.

::UPDATE:: Like i mentioned up above, things change. My latest inquires into this subject found that almost all branches are requiring at least a 50 now. If enlistments start to drop they will go back to the below standard guidelines… but as of mid Feb 2012… you need at least a 50 to have a shot.

Also, if you have a GED you will need to also have at least 15 college credits to enlist.

Air Force

The Air Force has some of the highest ASVAB scores.  Your AFQT score on the ASVAB must be at least a 36 to enlist, don’t let that fool you though. Over 70% of people in the Air force have scored over 50, so it’s very competitive.

If you have a GED you will need to score above a 65. In fact, less than 1% of all Air Force staff have a GED… so if you have one and want to get into the AF, get some college courses under your belt and score high on the AFQT.

A minimum score of 31 is needed to get in if you have a high school diploma. If you have a GED will need a 50. The Army has been known to raise its scores up to 50 for everyone in times of high enlistments.

With a high school diploma you will be good with a 35 score, with a GED you will need a 50 to enlist.

The Navy is the only branch that treats the Reserves differently. If you are thinking of heading in that direction you will need at least a 31 to enlist with a HS diploma or a 50 with a GED.

Coast Guard

The smart guys.  The Coast Guard is the smallest branch so just because recruits meet the minimum ASVAB scores does not mean they are guaranteed enlistment. To enlist in the CG you need a minimum of 40 point on the AFQT, waivers are possible of you are prior service. Very few people are allowed to enlist with a GED but just in case.. you would need a t least a 50.

Marine Corps

Future Devil Dogs must have ASBAB scores of at least 32 on their AFQT. GED holders must get a 50 or more. The Marine Corps allows less than 5% of recruits to be GED holders… so you better be special.
